if you were to ask if books or the movie version of a book was better? most people would answer book. which i think is completely legit. a lot of times movies leave out the best parts of the book, they don't stay true to the story, the characters don't develop. movies often Hollywood(ize) every book, adding fancy special effects where they don't need to be, and making every character drop dead gorgeous.
but i also believe that movies, if done well, add something beautiful to a story. take for example lord of the rings. its one of the best fantasy books ever written, some would argue the best. and yes the movie did leave out a lot of side plot, but they got most of it right. not only that but the movie added something to the story. the music and landscapes they filmed created the perfect touch to middle earth. they enhanced the story, made it better.
so i agree that most of the time movies buthur the books they are trying to be, but when its done right, movies become beautiful representations of books.
I agree with you that cinematography can make the movie a work of art. I guess sometimes the creators of the movie feel that the story must be changed to grab a broader audience or that there is not enough time to fit every storyline from the book into the short time they have.

I used LOTR as an example for my blog too. It really is a masterpiece because it takes a great trilogy of books and shows them to us in ways that were awesome. The way it brings the book to life is almost unmatched. I wasnt able to imagine orcs, walking trees, and trolls as well as the movie portrayed them. It was just awesome to see it in action too because you can imagine it but to watch it is something really special.

I agree with you and the lord of the rings is a perfect example because the books were entertaining but had so many unnecessary details and side stories that it detracted from the experience. I also agree with you that seeing a book you enjoyed become hollywoodized can be just downright painful to watch as they change everything you had envisioned in your head and replace it with things that do not add to the story.

I think that LOTR was a great movie mostly because it had the kind of story that suits a hollywood film. See my post this week for detail
