This song is a sequel - part 2 of 3 songs called “The Heart ”
This is the first song off of Kendrick Lamar’s appreciation mix
tape (O)verly (D)edicated. From what I understand,
his friend Dash Snow died in 2009 of an overdose. His death is what provoked
Kendrick Lamar to do this mix tape and, also the intro with the interview is
important for understanding the meaning of the song. The track was recorded over
a loop from the The Roots - A Piece of Light (Instrumental) - YouTube. I find this necessary to include, it adds a layer of meaning simply by the title of the loop he used to record over, and
also might help with understanding the lyrics he uses to describe his feelings
within this song.
Kendrick uses many patterns of poetic language, subliminal messages, double entendres, complex wording that make you think, and repetitionto enhance the situation within the song. Also when Kendrick starts rapping fast and coughs at the end, I believe this symbolizes him giving his heart out,
hence the title.
Some specific uses of poetic language in this song:
(explanation) I had to read this a few times in order to understand what he’s saying here but it
seems that simply you should listen to him or be deaf.
But really I'm just caught in the loop, of understanding the truth
Because it seems it's always clashing with science
I got a big fear of flying
My future so bright I'd probably go blind before I blink twice, I ain't lying
(explanation) He’scaught in the loop of the Roots’ song but also caught in the loop in understanding the truth.
"You walking down the block, he got shot, you are no eye witness
You just mind your bidness
You just turn your head, kneel down and then tie your tennis" (repetition)
(explanation) Kendrick uses repetition, and to me when he’s says the witness, bidness, and tennis he ends all the words the same and I believe that has meaning behind it.
Look the mastermind, took the masters mind
Just the perfect time, just to master mine
Just to match the grind with precision
Look the mastermind (cough)
(explanation) Kendrick here is quite literally rapping his heart out.
