I agree that in the book so far, representations of women have been pretty negative. Maybe as the book progresses women will seek agency and the way how they are portrayed will change.

I agree with this completly, Joe see's Janie as just another one of his things he bought with his charm and money.

I actually disagree because Janie is portrayed as a strong charismatic girl who can stand up for herself. Joe treats her better than the man that Janie's grandmother married her off with. There are a few times where he becomes abusive but towards the end of Joe's life Janie begins to stand up for herself again. This book has a positive message about women in general.
