I was quite struck by the course of the conversation my class had on Tuesday. We started to discuss Joe and Joanna's relationship, and soon, we ended up discussing race relations in America. Mr. Heidkamp mentioned that Light in August brings many racially-related issues to light. He then showed us a clip from Birth of a Nation, and mentioned that America's story is all about one race being superior and one race being inferior.
You know, it's always the same: Every time we discuss race, someone always mentions that Americans have been bad for showing so much racism, and that racism is steeped deeply into our story. This conversation is only one example of what I’m thinking of; the same thing happened during the Martin Luther King Day Assembly, particularly this past year: A student gets up in front of the whole school and lambastes Americans for not having done enough yet to overcome racism.
And I’m really tired of hearing such talk. I know it’s important that we must acknowledge that America’s history is steeped in racism, and that Americans are racist even subconsciously, but what good will it do us just to sit around and talk about how bad Americans have been. Why don’t we instead get up and DO something—DO something to destroy the conscious and subconscious racism in Americans.
I really feel like we’re all wasting our time just sitting around talking about this. If racism is really that bad, then we shouldn’t be wasting our time discussing the relationship of Joe and Joanna, discussing how it reveals racism in America, and especially wasting time spending hours reading pages and pages of Light in August. I mean, Mr Heidkamp even claims that all the time we spend discussing the book in class will barely scratch the surface of its immense literary depth. So instead of even trying to dive deep, let's focus our discussions towards something that's more practical and will make better use of our time.
School should not be forcing us to do loads of work, but teaching and training us to be people who can positively contribute to humanity in an active manner. And anyone who discusses existentialism extensively should realize that “schoolwork” and the structure of our class are “social constructs” that aren’t doing good to any of us, or to our world at large.
At the beginning of this calendar year of 2009, I made it my New Year's Resolution to actively promote social justice in the world and positively contribute to humanity. I'm still looking for ways I can do this. Maybe someone out there will offer me some suggestions, for the good of all humanity.
So let’s discuss, and then go out, and actively DO something to end racism in America, so that our story will not continue to be written with racism. And let’s do it together, because our efforts can find success together.
Yet, we won't ever find success if we don't acknowledge and humbly submit to the great moral force that created the world and continues to be its standard of Truth. If we seek His favor, surely He'll grant us success. For “Did we in our own strength confide,/ our striving would be losing./ Were not the right man on our side/ the man of God’s own choosing;/ Dost ask who that may be?/ Christ Jesus it is He,/ Lord Sabaoth his name,/ From age to age the same,/ And He [WILL] win the battle.” (“A Mighty Fortress is our God”, by Martin Luther)
