Perhaps it is just the radical feminist in me speaking, but I have never yelled louder at the characters in a book I was reading for school than I have at Mrs. Bennet and Mr. Collins, and the general clan.
First of all, I hate how Mr. Collins is so appealing because he has money and such. And then, the male chauvinistic pig thinks that he can get any woman he wants because he has money. Women are people too. There is more to forming a relationship than just getting lots of fancy things and having stuff. The sad thing is, though, Mrs. Bennet wants her daughter to inherit money, rather than be happy for the rest of her life.
And then, when Lizzy decides that she will not marry Mr. Collins, her mother goes off one her like none other. Why would a parent be so angry at a child who wants to be happy in life. Money isn't everything, and it's important to notice that fact.
I am appalled that society would treat such a sacred bond as marriage as just a man's thing. Even the first line says that a man with money needs to buy himself a woman.
Women are not property. We need to be recognized as having feelings. Is anyone else angered by England's sexist views on society?
