Unconsciousness Vs. Consciousness

I think Leggatt is actually the unconscious half of the captain. With Leggatt, the captain is able to forget all the social rules and the moralities. Only when he is alone with Leggatt,  the captain is able to express his true feelings and face himself as who he actually is. The captain is able to find the similarity between himself and Leggatt and uncontrollably fall in love with Leggatt, although it is against the morality at the time. There is always a strangeness exists inside the captain. At the beginning of the story he complains about how little he knows about his crew, "My strangeness, which had made me sleepless.... the ship of which I knew nothing, manned by men of whom I knew very little more."(Pg. 125) Because the captain is young and comparatively well educated, his present doesn't fit with the rest of the crew. On the other hand the existence of Leggatt brings many similarity and make the captain feel that he actually belong to this place. Thus, the unconsciously, Leggatt become the mental and emotional safe house for the captain, but the conscious half of the captain is telling him that hiding a murderer in his own room and having a relationship with a man is morally incorrect.

My comment about Secret Sharer"

I totally agree with you. i have no doubt that the captain and Leggat has a romantic, relationships. there is no noe taht can get and destroy and get in thier way in their,
relationships, It has been said that love is blind that lovers can not see:::

in the story secret sharer it is done discreetly::

You can figure it out when the looked at each others, and when tehy talked whspering to each other,

ar saomw point we can connect some twist of the secret sharer to Meaursault He was not fully accepted by the people and they don't care, and the captain too the crew of the ship don"t like him,

The novella tok place neaar the gulf os Siam, the nameless captain, He is a greenhorn

of thecrew of the ship,

He rescued the naked swimmer holding on the side of the ship,

He took him and hide him in in the cabin,

without the rest of the crews knowledge"

The swimmer aswaam away from Sephora from a nearby ship, where he killed another crew member during the storm,

The narrator keeps Leggggats hidden in the captains room away from ths suspicious crew member,.

then the relationships stars from the succeding days,

when they look at each other and talked so close and you cal read between the lines,

At he end of the story Leggat was lowered himself into the water to take his punishment as a free and proud swimmer,

and going to a new destiny,

You just ponder the ending of the story

waht ever happened to him in the vast sea.

comment, there must be a very good moral lessons here, so many people in this world

is doing that even they are married to someone

it is done secretly,
this is part of life being alive,

because we have no control of our feeings and love for someone,

it is very hard to fathom

it is incorrect and morally wrong,
someone should be loyal to each other

no affair with other people when you are married but they have the freedom to love,
and express their own desires

The captain had done a very grave
mistakes in his life

harboring a murderer nad haaving an affair with him.
