The passage I would like to discuss begins in the middle of page 202 ("Her children, an insane whisper whispered to him...") and ends on 204 ("Madness slunk through a chink in History..."). This is referring to when Estha and Rahel are at Velutha's house while Rahel is supposed to be taking a nap. Roy has barely talked about the relationship between Ammu and Velutha, but this passage seems to be an indicator of what it is like.
When Velutha looks at the twins and angrily thinks "Her eyes, her mouth. Her teeth.", I feel like he is almost being teased by their similar looks to Ammu. He cannot openly express his feelings due to their different social class, and interaction with the twins only emphasizes that for him.
Toward the end of the passage, Velutha "tried to hate her...he couldn't." I think the fact that their love is hidden makes him want to dislike her because hiding it is worse than not having a relationship at all, but he just can't seem to.
This definitely relates to the third prompt we talked about an alienated character, but does anyone have any insight to this? How can this be more specifically tied to the prompt?
